The Musts

  • Anne Frank House
  • Rijksmuseum
  • Van Gogh Museum
  • Nine Streets wander
  • Westerkerk tower
  • Winkel 43 apple pie
  • Bloemenmarkt
  • Night canal cruise

Practical Tips

  • Pre-book these three, tonight.

Anne Frank House (release ~6 weeks ahead, sells out fast), Rijksmuseum, and Van Gogh Museum all use timed slots. If Anne Frank is sold out at 10am, grab whatever time is left and re-shuffle around it.

  • Walk everything.

Hotel to Anne Frank: 2 min. To Rijksmuseum: 25 min through Nine Streets — do it. Or grab a tram (2 or 12) if legs are cooked.

  • GVB day pass (~€9)

covers trams, buses, metro for 24 hours. Buy on the tram or at a machine. Contactless bank cards also work — tap on and tap off.

  • Watch the bike lanes.

The red asphalt is a bike lane, not a sidewalk. Locals will not slow down. Look both ways twice.

  • Alternative: Vondelpark

Amsterdam's Central Park. 120 acres of paths, ponds, street musicians, and locals on bikes. Grab a coffee at Blauwe Theehuis (the round 1930s pavilion) and sit. Best mid-afternoon reset in the city.

  • Alternative: Begijnhof

A 14th-century courtyard tucked behind an unmarked door off Spui square. Whitewashed almshouses around a quiet green, one of the oldest wooden houses in Amsterdam (1420) still standing. Free, silent, most tourists walk right past it.

  • Alternative: A'DAM Lookout

Rooftop across the IJ with the best skyline view in the city and 'Over the Edge' — Europe's highest swing, dangling you 100m over the water. Free 3-min ferry from behind Centraal Station gets you there.

  • Alternative: Albert Cuyp Market

Largest outdoor street market in the Netherlands — 260 stalls, 6 days a week. Stroopwafels made fresh in front of you, raw herring stands, cheese, flowers, fabric. De Pijp is Amsterdam's coolest food neighborhood; wander after.
